Changes in Oropharyngeal Cavity Size of Dysarthric Children

Ronald Netsell
The University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa

Subjects were six cerebral palsied children with significant velopharyngeal dysfunction. The following hypothesis was tested: no decrease in the oropharyngeal cavity size will occur during vowel production following the insertion of a velopharyngeal prosthesis. Cinefluorographic measurements revealed a general decrease in oropharyngeal cavity size during low vowel production once a prosthesis was inserted. Significant changes were not observed in the high vowel comparisons.
